USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team dropped a four-set contest to Wyoming this evening (Oct. 18), in its first Mountain West rematch of the conference season. With head coach Macey Donathan trying out different lineups as the contest progressed, the Falcons fell 15-25, 14-25, 25-16, 18-25 to the visiting Cowgirls at Cadet East Gym.
The ball went through Alysa Walker on Saturday, as the sophomore collected a match-high 16 kills and was one of only two players on either side of the net to tally double-digit strikes. Freshman Sam Pope recorded the first 20-assist match of her career, as she led all players with 23 helpers – and accounted for her first two collegiate kills, served up one of the team's four aces, and recorded her second double-double of the year with 11 digs. Senior Jordan Suan accounted for a match-high 17 digs, while sophomore Grace Fiaseu rounded out the Falcons' list of stat leaders with a team-high six blocks (all assisted).
Senior Ashley Bible opened the night with a service ace, while a pair of kills from both Walker and senior Alex Hatchett helped Air Force jump out to a quick 6-3 lead. The Cowgirls rattled off five-straight points to go up 8-6, before sophomore Bella Christensen stopped their run with a kill. While another strike from Walker kept the Falcons within two (10-12), Wyoming used an 9-0 run to take a 21-10 lead on Air Force. Hatchett put down a kill and teamed up with Christensen for a pair of blocks, but the Cowgirls picked up the 25-15 win.
Wyoming continued its scoring streak in the second, jumping out to a fast 5-0 run before Bible put the Falcons on the board. Walker, Hatchett and Fiaseu all tallied kills, bur Cowgirls quickly pushed their advantage out to seven (11-4). Fiaseu (two) and classmate Brooksie Isham combined for three kills and teamed up for a block, but Wyoming pushed their lead out to 20-9. Walked put the Falcons in double figures on the next point and accounted for three of the final four points as the Cowgirls rolled 25-14.
The Cowgirls took an early 4-1 lead to start the third, but Air Force clawed back with a stretch that saw Fiaseu and junior Annamaria Ramos team up for two blocks. A kill and ace from Pope gave Air Force its first lead of the night (10-9) – a lead the Falcons quickly pushed to four (14-10) behind kills from Hatchett, Ramos and Isham. Backed by an ace, Suan served the Falcons out to a 19-12 lead, while multiple kills from Fiaseu and Walker helped Air Force capture the 25-16 win and take its first set of the year from Wyoming.
Wyoming took the opening point of the fourth, but a kill and block from Ramos (assisted by Fiaseu) helped Air Force take a 4-3 lead. The teams traded points to tie the set at six, seven and eight, before the Cowgirls pushed out to a two-point lead (10-8). Strikes from Walker kept the Falcons within two (10-12, 11-13), but Wyoming scored four-straight points to push its lead out to six (17-11). Walker (two), Hatchett, Ramos and Pope added kills, while Isham and Fiaseu teamed up for a block, but Wyoming earned the 25-18 to complete a season sweep of Air Force.
The Falcons head back out on the road next week, as they play at Colorado State on Thursday, Oct. 23, and travel to Nevada on Saturday, Oct. 25.
