Falcons dominate Lobos in 17-2 win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The Air Force lineup managed 20 hits on Friday, as the Falcons drubbed the visiting Lobos 17-2 to open the three-game series.
Jay Thomason was perfect on the day, going 4-4 with two home runs, four RBI, and a stolen base. The sophomore batted twice in the 2nd inning where drove in three runs, as he led off the frame with a solo blast before bringing home two more with a hard single up the middle. Thomason now leads Air Force with six home runs this season, having mashed two home runs in three of his last four games.
Sam Kulasingam went 4-5 with three RBI as his two-run home run in the 8th inning was his second of 2022, both of which have come at Falcon Field. Another sophomore, Kulasingam's RBI double was part of a seven-run 2nd inning for Air Force. Jake Greiving was 3-6 with two RBI and three runs scored. His 1st inning RBI single opened the scoring for the Falcons.
As well, Blake Covin, Gabriel Garcia, Braydon Altorfer, and Aerik Joe each had two hits, with Altorfer producing three RBI in five at-bats.
Paul Skenes picked pu his second win of the season, tossing five scoreless innings to go with five strikeouts. Skenes allowed only three hits, with both of his walks coming in his final inning on the mound.
Freshmen Sawyer Hawks and Dylan Rogers piggybacked the rest of the day, as both righties pitched two innings. Hawks allowed a two-run home run in the 6th before setting the Lobos down in order in the 7th. Rogers held New Mexico scoreless in the 8th and 9th, scattering three hits while producing four ground outs over his six outs.
The 2nd inning saw Air Force comfortably put the game out of reach. After a Greiving RBI single and an Altorfer RBI groundout in the 1st, Thomason's solo home run to lead off the 2nd gave Air Force a 3-0 lead. Joe and Covin both reached with one out, when Kulasingam brought the Falcons shortstop around to score after a line drive double towards the left field corner to bring the Air Force lead to 4-0. Garcia followed Kulasingam with a RBI single past the New Mexico shortstop, increasing the home lead to 5-0. With runners on the corners, a potential double play was booted by the Lobos second baseman, bringing home Kulasingam.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Cayden Zimmerman helped Air Force execute a nearly flawless hit and run, as the senior drove a ground ball through a vacated third base for a double, scoring Garcia to bring the lead to 7-0. Thomason, who led off the 2nd, managed his second hit of the inning, a hard single up the middle to score both Greiving and Zimmerman to cap a seven-run frame. Following the 2nd, the Falcons proceeded to score at least one run in four of the last six innings.
Game Two between Air Force and New Mexico is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, with first-pitch set for noon.
