U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force junior Dominik Wasik earned his first career shutout as the Falcons blanked Brown, 2-0, in a non-conference game Friday, Oct. 31, at the Cadet Ice Arena. In just his second career start, Wasik earned his first career victory.
After two scoreless periods, the Falcons had a 20-5 shot advantage, but Brown goalie Tyler Shea and Wasik each kept their net clean.
Air Force (2-4-1 overall) broke the scoreless tie when junior defenseman Nolan Cunningham scored his first of the season on a rebound from the left circle. Nick Sajevic and Sam Stitz had the assists as the Falcons led 1-0 at 10:36 of the third. With 3:17 left and Brown on the power play, Bear forward Matthew Cataldo took a shot from the slot and Wasik stuck his left pad out at the last minute to make the save. Led by Wasik's save, the Falcons killed the penalty and held a 1-0 lead. With 1:52 left, the Bears pulled the goalie, but the Falcons blocked three shots and Wasik made two more saves. With 15 seconds remaining, Ren Morque chipped a puck out of his own end and Owen Dubois scored an empty-netter from the red line to seal the win.
Air Force outshot Brown, 34-13, in the game. Air Force was 0-for-3 on the power play and killed both of the Bear man-advantages. Wasik made 13 saves while Shea had 32.
"We carried the play, but we have to find a way to support our effort a little better," head coach Frank Serratore said. "With the territorial dominance that we had, we need to find a way to convert more often. That game could have easily gotten away from us. The effort level was there and we deserved to win that game."
Air Force and Brown (0-1-0 overall) conclude the two-game series Saturday, Nov. 1, at 5:05 pm MT at Cadet Ice Arena.
