COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Air Force senior Piper Heineck was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 20 – marking the second time in three weeks that the Scottsdale, Ariz., native has earned the conference’s weekly honor. Heineck is the first Air Force player to capture the weekly award more than once in a season – and only the second to earn more than one in a career.
The senior averaged 1.60 blocks per set, as she helped Air Force to its third 2-0 week of the Mountain West season on Nov. 15-18. Heineck tallied a match-high nine stops (one solo, eight assisted) in the Falcons’ 3-2 victory over New Mexico on Wednesday, Nov. 15, and added a team-best seven blocks (one solo, six assisted) in Air Force’s five-set victory over UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 18. In addition, she added 11 digs (1.10 per set) over the two contests, with six against New Mexico and five against UNLV.
Heineck, who chipped in 27 total kills over the two contests, with 13 against New Mexico and 14 against UNLV, secured the Falcons’ fourth-set victory over New Mexico during her final contest at the Academy on Nov. 15. With Air Force trailing 23-20, the senior scored the final five points (one kill, four assisted blocks) to give Air Force the 25-23 win and force the deciding set.
The Falcons collected a pair of five-set victories during the final weekend of the season, as they earned their first win over New Mexico in 14 years on Wednesday, Nov. 15, and rallied from two-sets down for their first-ever road victory against UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 18. Air Force completed the 2017 campaign with a 14-18 record and a 7-11 mark in conference action, with the seven MW victories tying for the most conference wins for Air Force since it joined the Division I level.
