With just two weeks left of the season, the Air Force volleyball team wraps up the road schedule this Saturday (Nov. 20), when it travels to San Diego, Calif., for the second Mountain West Conference matchup of the season with San Diego State. The match, the only match for the Falcons this week, is slated to start at 1 p.m. (PST) at Peterson Gym on the Aztecs' campus.
Match Notes 13: at San Diego State
LAST TIME WE MET
The Oct. 21 match between Air Force and San Diego State was an especially memorable one, as the Falcons snapped a 74-match conference losing streak that dated back to 2005. During the Falcons' 3-1 win over the Aztecs, the Falcons posted season-best marks in hitting percentage (.248), kills (59) and assists (56). Caroline Kurt had a career-best 24 kills, while adding 13 digs for her 20th double-double of the season.
FALCONS TAKE ONE FROM BYU
Air Force defeated BYU 25-20 during the third set of the Nov. 13 match at the Academy, marking the first time since 2005 that the Falcons have taken a set from the Cougars (a span of 10 matches).
MAKING HISTORY
Jessica Hellmann became just the third player in the program's Division I history to tally over 2,000 assists in a career during the Falcons' match against BYU on Nov. 13. She accounted for 45 assists - her second-highest total of the season - to break the 2000-assist mark. She also added four kills, a .667 hitting percentage, a pair of service aces and two assisted blocks to her stat line. She is just shy of the Falcons' top-10 list for assists in a career with 601.
SPENCER'S SOMETHING SPECIAL
Kelly Spencer had a record-setting time on Nov. 11-13, as she became just the third Division I player to tally over 300 digs in a season (versus Utah, Nov. 11) and just the fourth Division I player to record over 800 in a career (versus BYU, Nov. 13).
DID YOU KNOW?
Only four Division I Falcons have recorded at least 800 digs in a career ... and two of them are on this year's team. Caroline Kurtz is currently third with 828, while Kelly Spencer is fourth with 809. The pair has moved themselves into the upper echelon of that record, as the player with the fifth-most career digs is back at 740.
MORE STATS AND SUCH
Nichole Stilwell tallied her 40th career solo block against Utah on Nov. 11, while Caroline Kurtz moved into the all-time Division I top-10 single-season kills list (326) during that match. Highlighted by 18 kills against BYU on Nov. 13, Kurtz vaulted into eighth all-time.
JUST BLOCK IT OUT
The Falcons boasted their best blocking effort of the Mountain West Conference season against BYU on Nov. 13, combining for one solo and 12 assisted blocks. Julia Hansen led the way with five total stops (one solo, four assisted), while Jessica Hellmann, Nichole Stilwell and Caroline Kurtz each added a pair of assisted blocks.
AROUND THE MOUNTAIN
In the Mountain West Conference rankings, Caroline Kurtz is ranked second in the kills, with a per-set average of 3.58, and fifth in points-per-set with a 3.85 average. Jessica Hellmann is ranked eighth in assists, as she averages 6.33 helpers per set, while Kelly Spencer is ranked ninth in digs with 3.29 per set.
WHAT'S ON DECK
Air Force concludes the 2010 campaign at 7 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 26, when it hosts UNLV. The match, held at Falcon Court at East Gym, will be the final collegiate contest for the Falcons' seven seniors - Emily Frick, Julia Hansen, Jessica Hellmann, Caroline Kurtz, Jacqueline Norton, Kelly Spencer and Nichole Stilwell.
