COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After posting the best single-match blocking performance in the conference this season and setting three Academy records, Air Force senior Piper Heineck (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Nov. 6. It is the first weekly award for the Falcons’ senior, who helped the Falcons to a perfect 2-0 homestand.
Heineck assisted on 13 blocks during the Falcons’ victory over San Diego State on Nov. 5, breaking the Academy’s all-time single-match record of 12 that had stood since 1991. In addition, that tally also improved the program’s Division I record of 11 that had stood since 2004. She also added a solo stop in that match for a new Air Force DI single-match record of 14 total blocks, improving the previous record of 12 that she set as a sophomore. With those stops – the highest single-match performance in the conference this season, Heineck accounted the first double-double of her career, as she added 15 kills on .458 hitting. Heineck’s performance at the net also helped the team account for new Air Force DI records in assisted (46) and total (25.0) blocks.
The senior added eight stops (one solo, seven assisted) in the Falcons’ 3-2 win over Fresno State on Nov. 3, while tallying 12 kills on .364 hitting and recording one service ace. For the weekend, Heineck accounted for 22 blocks (two solo, 20 assisted), 27 kills on .413 hitting and a pair of aces.
The Falcons collected a pair of five-set victories over the Nov. 3-5 weekend, as they defeated Fresno State and San Diego State at the Academy. Air Force earned its first-ever season sweep of Fresno State, as it improved to 5-9 in conference action (12-16 overall).
