Oct. 9, 2013
The Air Force volleyball team returns to the Academy this week for a pair of Mountain West matches. The Falcons will host UNLV in a late afternoon match on Thursday, Oct. 10, before welcoming San Diego State to the Cadet East Gym on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Thursday's match will begin at 4 p.m., due to the Air Force football game at 7 p.m., while Saturday's contest is slated for the usual time of 6 p.m. Please note, the road constructions detours for entering and exiting are scheduled to be completed by Thursday afternoon. Both matches will have live stats at GoAirForceFalcons.com, although video streaming will not be available.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
UNLV and San Diego State hold matching 8-6 overall records and are tied for third in the conference with identical 3-1 marks. The Rebels are coming off of a split weekend, defeating San Jose State in four and falling to Fresno State in three. San Diego State, who will travel to New Mexico on Thursday prior to facing the Falcons on Saturday, defeated both Fresno State (3-1) and San Jose State (3-0) last weekend.
UNLV is 32-2 all-time against Air Force, with the Falcons' last win coming in 1999. San Diego State leads its all-time series with the Falcons by a 31-2 margin. Air Force most recently defeated the Aztecs in 2010, as its 3-1 win snapped a five-year losing streak in conference play.
AIR FORCE GETS UNEXPECTED WEEKEND OFF
Air Force received an unexpected break from competition the first week of October, as the government shutdown forced the cancellation of the squad's matches at Boise State and at Utah State. The Academy is working with the Mountain West and both schools to determine possible makeup dates.
WHAT'S ON DECK
Air Force will make its first trip to San Jose, Calif., in nearly two decades next week, when it faces conference newcomer San Jose State on Thursday, Oct. 17. While in California, the Falcons will also take on second-year Mountain West opponent Fresno State on Saturday, Oct. 19.
