ORLANDO, FLA. - (Aug. 31) The Air Force volleyball team opened the season with a disappointing 3-0 loss, as the Falcons were swept by Florida International at the Central Florida Fall Invitational.
The Golden Panthers' outside hitting duo of Adriana Fundora and Nirvana Kos dominated the frontline, combining for 30 kills on 60 attempts. As a team, FIU had 50 kills on 109 attacks for a solid .330 hitting percentage, compared to the Falcons, who had just 32 kills on 107 attacks for a .150 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Brittany Edmonds was the only Falcon to finish the match in double figures in kills, notching 10 on 28 attacks. Team captain Gina Marino had nine kills in her first action since 1999. Sophomore Kristin Huitt led the team with 20 assists and 10 digs.
The Falcons never led in any of the three games. In game two, the Falcons rallied for five straight points to bring them to within one point of the lead, 23-24, but the Panthers regained momentum with a four-point run and closed out the game on their next serve.
The Falcons looked uncomfortable receiving serves, committing 16 reception errors in the three games. For the first time in college volleyball, each error cost the team a point, as the teams use rally scoring in all games.
Air Force will look to regroup, as the tournament continues Saturday (Sept. 1). The Falcons face Appalachian State at 10 a.m. EST.
