COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force volleyball team earned the highest preseason conference ranking in program history this morning, as the Mountain West released its 2014 preseason coaches' poll. With 31 points, the Falcons were picked ninth in the 11-team league.
It is just the second time in program history that the Falcons have not been picked to finish last in the conference standings. Air Force, which is coming off of a season that included a tie for the most conference wins in Academy history (five), held the final spot in the preseason rankings for 13 years, before moving into 10th (of 11) last year and ninth (of 11) this year.
With seven of the 11 first-place votes and 97 total points, Colorado State was picked to win the conference title for the fourth time in five years, while New Mexico claimed the remaining four first-place nods to finish second with 91 total points. Utah State (third, 81 points) and San Diego State (fourth, 73 points) rounded out the top four, while Wyoming (55 points) edged Boise State (54 points) by one to take fifth. UNLV is ranked seventh with 50 points, while Fresno State (eighth, 40 points), Air Force (ninth, 31 points), San Jose State (10th, 21 points) and Nevada (11th, 12 points) round out the field.
The Falcons open the 2014 season at home on Friday, August 29, when they host Winthrop at 6:00 p.m.
