Air Force Trio Earns Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Honors
June 28, 2011
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Three members of the Air Force volleyball team earned Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors, the conference office announced this afternoon (June 28). Recently commissioned second lieutenants Jessica Hellmann, Caroline Kurtz and Nichole Stilwell represented the Academy on the volleyball list. The 2010-11 selection marked the fourth straight year that Kurtz and Stilwell have earned Scholar-Athlete distinction, while Hellman made her third appearance in as many years. Kurtz and Stilwell join former setter Kim Kallabis as the only Falcons in program history to claim Scholar-Athlete honors all four years. Kurtz, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, graduated with a team-leading grade point average of 3.91 in systems engineering-human systems. Hellmann completed her four-year studies with a 3.74 GPA in English, while Stilwell, a 2008 CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, maintained a mathematics GPA of 3.70. To be eligible for the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
