Katie Batchelder to Forgo Senior Season
Feb. 13, 2009
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force volleyball player Katie Batchelder will forgo her senior season to spend the fall semester in Marseille, France, as a part of the Academy's cadet-exchange program. Batchelder is a foreign area studies major, with a concentration in Africa.
While in France, Batchelder will attend L'Ecole de l'Air, which is the French counterpart of the U.S. Air Force Academy. The school takes approximately six to eight cadets each year, while sending the same number of exchange students to Colorado. While there, Batchelder will visit local military installations, complete survival and jump training, as well as attending a full load of classes.
In her free time, the Chico, Calif., native will have the opportunity to travel throughout the French countryside and to other locations throughout Europe.
This will not be the first time that studies have taken Batchelder overseas. Prior to her junior year, Batchelder spent three weeks in Morocco as a part of the Academy's Language Immersion Program (highlights from her travels can be found on the volleyball sidebar).
Batchelder was the program's MVP as a freshman and has been a constant leader on the program during each of her first three years. A three-year started, Batchelder concluded her career with 591 kills, 459 digs, 29 service aces and 63 total blocks.
The exchange program between the Air Force Academy and L'Ecole de l'Air began in 1969. Since that time, over 400 cadets and their French counterparts have taken part in the semester-long exchange.
