COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Five members of the 2009 Air Force volleyball team were named to the Mountain West Conference all-academic team, the league office announced this afternoon (Feb. 11). The five Air Force volleyball selections match the program's best-ever total. Assisted by three current honorees, the Falcons first accounted for five all-conference selections in 2007.

Juniors Jessica Hellmann, Caroline Kurtz and Nichole Stilwell were named to the academic all-conference list for the third time in as many years. CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree Kurtz leads the Falcons - and all Air Force fall honorees - with a 3.88 grade-point-average in systems engineering management. Stilwell, who is spending the current semester in the Ukraine as a part of the Academy's Exchange Program, boasted a 3.74 GPA in mathematics, while Hellmann holds a cumulative GPA of 3.66 in English.

In addition, senior Michelle Harrington and freshman Maiya Perich earned their first academic all-conference selections. Harrington has a 3.05 GPA in systems engineering management, while Perich, currently undeclared on a major, holds a 3.17 average.

A total of 384 student-athletes were named to the "Fall 2009" Academic All-Mountain West Conference team. Fall sports include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
