Nov. 20, 2010Annalyse Schmitt (13) and senior Caroline Kurtz (12) combined for 25 of the team's 44 kills, as the Falcons fell in close 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 scores at Peterson Gym.
Four of the Falcons' five attackers hit better than .400, as the squad hit .366 as a team, connecting on 44 of 101 attempts, while committing just seven errors. Senior Nichole Stilwell led the way, attacking at a .462 clip (7k-1e-13a), while classmate Julia Hansen (.444, 4k-0e-9a), Schmitt (.429, 13k-1e-28a) and freshman Cami Richan (.400, 8k-0e-22a) all hit at least .400 in the match. Senior Jessica Hellmann assisted on 37 of the team's 44 kills.
Kurtz, who posted 12 kills on 27 attempts with three errors (.333), added a team-leading 12 digs for her 23rd double-double of the season. Sophomore Maiya Perich added 10 digs, while Stilwell led the team with two blocks (one solo, one assisted) and Hansen had the squad's lone service ace.
San Diego State posted the first point of the match, but Air Force quickly responded with a 3-2 lead, behind kills from Richan and Schmitt. The Aztecs scored four of the next five points to go up 6-4, but a pair of kills from Kurtz helped Air Force to regain an 8-7 lead. Kurtz added another kill (9-8), but SDSU claimed the next three points to take an 11-10 advantage. Richan and Schmitt each put down another kill, as Air Force tied the set at 12. San Diego State retook the lead at 16-13, but kills by Stilwell and Hansen brought the Falcons within one (16-15). The Aztecs scored five of the next six points to go up 21-16, but a kill by Richan stopped their run. Hansen served up a service ace and Schmitt tallied a pair of kills, but the Falcons fell 25-21.
Schmitt scored first in the second set and another kill by Richan put the Falcons up 3-1. San Diego State went on a 7-0 run to take an 8-3 lead, forcing the Falcons to call a timeout. Coming out of the break, Stilwell put down a kill and Kurtz added a pair of back-to-back strikes. Air Force put together a string of points to pull within two (11-9), behind three straight kills from Kurtz, Richan and Hansen. The Aztecs continued to lead, despite kills from Richan and Stilwell. Trailing 20-16, Air Force scored four of the next five points to cut San Diego State's advantage to one (21-20). Schmitt put down a pair of back-to-back kills during the late-game run. Schmitt added another kill, but their comeback fell short, as SDSU won the set by a 25-22 score.
The two teams traded points to start the third set. Air Force jumped out to a 2-1 lead off kills from Hansen and Kurtz, but SDSU responded with a 3-2 advantage. Schmitt tied the set at three, Stilwell evened it again at four and Kurtz kept the score matched at five. Air Force kept the score within one (11-10), behind kills from Schmitt and Richan. Schmitt added another pair of kills, while an assisted block from Stilwell and Hellmann kept the Falcons within one (14-13). A kill by Stilwell helped Air Force even the score at 15, but San Diego State took a 19-17 lead. Richan (19-18) and Schmitt (20-19) kept the Falcons within one, but the Aztecs accounted for five of the last six points to win the final set 25-21.
The tight match featured 20 tied scores and nine lead changes.
The Falcons close out the 2010 season on Friday, Nov. 26, when they host UNLV at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, Air Force will recognize its seven-member senior class.
