Falcons Drop Home Finale to Wyoming

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped its final home match of the season on Saturday, Nov. 17, as it fell in straight sets to Wyoming at the Academy's East Gym. The Falcons dropped consecutive 14-25, 15-25, 20-25 sets to the visiting Cowgirls.
Freshman Felicia Clement posted a team-best six kills, while classmate Maggie Sherrill, sophomore Ayesha Hein and junior Cami Richan each added five. Richan and freshman Raquel Rosas both collected four assisted blocks, while Hein recorded a pair of solo blocks and three stops total. Sophomore Hillary Keltner collected 19 assists, while senior Maiya Perich tallied 10 digs. Sophomore Emma Dridge collected the team's lone service ace for the second straight match.
Clement and Richan opened the match with back-to-back kills, as Air Force took an early 3-1 lead. After Wyoming tied the set at four, Sherrill earned her first score of the game to give the Falcons the one-point advantage (5-4). The teams traded points, matching scores at five, six, seven and eight. Wyoming took the next two points to go up 10-8, before Keltner and Rosas teamed up for their second block of the set. The Cowgirls slowly extended their lead, despite Dridge's service ace and kills from Clement, Hein and Rosas (two). Up 18-14, Wyoming closed out the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-24.
Sherrill tallied a kill in the beginning of the second set, while the squads remained close, with tied scores at every point to 5-5. Wyoming broke the tie with a 3-0 run, before Keltner put down a kill to stop the run. Hein added a score, but the Cowgirls jumped out to a 14-8 advantage. Clement claimed another kill to cut the Falcons' deficit to five, but Wyoming broke open the set with eight unanswered points (22-9). Richan put the Falcons at 10 and teamed up with Rosas for a pair of blocks, but Wyoming took the 25-15 victory.
Air Force started strong in the third set, taking a 7-3 lead behind kills from Clement (two) and Hein (two), as well as two blocks from Hein (one solo, one assisted with Richan). The Cowgirls tied the set at seven, but Sherrill helped Air Force retake the lead at the 9-8 and 11-10 marks. Clement added a score to put the Falcons up 12-11, but Wyoming responded with a 9-0 run to go ahead 20-13. Hein stopped the Cowgirls' streak with a kill and used her second solo block to bookend a kill from Richan. Air Force cut its deficit to three (22-19) behind kills from Richan and Sherrill, as well as a block from Richan and freshman Taylor Parker. Richan added one final kill, but Wyoming completed the sweep with a 25-20 win.
The Falcons close out the 2012 season next weekend with road trips to Fresno State (Nov. 21) and UNLV (Nov. 23).
