Falcons Fall to San Diego State

    SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Air Force volleyball team fell in straight sets to San Diego State on Sunday, Nov. 12, as it closed out the road portion of the 2006 season in San Diego, Calif. After hitting .200 in the first game, but falling 30-16, the Falcons dropped consecutive 30-8 and 30-12 sets to the host Aztecs.

     

    San Diego State claimed the first three points, but Air Force earned its first kill at 4-2 from sophomore Kristina Stewart.  Senior Tara Dunn added a kill to keep the Falcons within two at the 6-4 mark. Dunn and freshman Katie Batchelder added a pair of kills, but San Diego State used a 6-0 run to extend its lead from three to nine points. Sophomore Jasamine Pettie posted back-to-back kills, dropping the second on an overpass of Batchelder's serve.  Stewart added a pair of kills, but San Diego State won the game by a 30-16 score.


     

     

     

    Batchelder earned the first point of the second set, but San Diego State rolled to the early lead behind a 12-1 run.  Stewart and freshman Hannah Sorber added kills, but the Aztecs took the second game by a 30-8 margin.

     

    Stewart scored the Falcons' first point, but the Aztecs used nine straight points to take the 10-1 lead. Stewart added a pair of kills, while freshman Michelle Harrington posted a solo block and a kill. The duo teamed up on an assisted stop to pull within six, but the Aztecs embarked on another long scoring run to take a 27-7 lead.  Dunn put down another kill and Air Force held San Diego State at match-point, as sophomore Jasamine Pettie accounted for a solo and assisted block.  The Aztecs finally claimed the deciding point at 30-12.

     

    Stewart led the Falcons with seven kills, while Dunn was second on the team with four.  Stewart also accounted for the team's best hitting percentage (.176). Junior Kim Kallabis tallied 13 assists, while classmate Rebecca Gerton, playing at the libero position for the first time this season, led all players with 10 digs. Pettie and Harrington accounted for a pair of blocks, while each adding an assisted stop as well.

     

    Air Force concludes the 2006 regular season next weekend at the Academy. The Falcons host No. 9 Utah on Friday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m., before hosting No. 21 BYU on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. Air Force will honor Dunn and manager Jeff West during a Senior Night ceremony prior to its Friday night match with Utah.
