Falcons Fall to Utah in Final Conference Meeting

    USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Despite a combined 20 kills from senior Caroline Kurtz and freshman Cami Richan, the Air Force volleyball team lost a 3-0 contest to Utah on Thursday, Nov. 11, at the Academy. Recording 13 kills and 11 digs, Kurtz recorded her 22nd double-double of the season, as the Falcons fell in straight 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 scores to the visiting Utes.

    Kurtz's 13 kills were the most of any player on the court, while freshman Cami Richan added seven for her second-highest output of the season. Connecting on seven of 14 attempts, while committing just three errors, Richan led all Falcons with a .286 hitting percentage.

    Kurtz and sophomore Maiya Perich paced the team with 11 digs apiece, while senior Nichole Stilwell recorded the team's lone solo block. Fellow senior Jessica Hellmann recorded 27 assists, while classmate Jacqueline Norton posted the Falcons' only ace.

    Air Force jumped out to a 2-1 lead, assisted by a kill from senior Emily Frick. A second strike from Frick put the Falcons ahead 3-2, while a kill by Kurtz helped the team go up 7-3. Utah quickly tied the set at seven and used several long serving streaks to take the lead. Richan, Frick, Kurtz and senior Julia Hansen added kills, but the Utes took the opening set by a 25-14 score.

    Utah struck first in the second set, but a kill by Stilwell evened the score. A kill from Kurtz tied the set at the next point and brought the Falcons within one at 4-3, but Utah quickly pulled head10-5. Richan and classmate Annalyse Schmitt tallied a pair of back-to-back kills, while Hellmann followed with a kill two points later. Utah increased its lead to 19-11, before Frick put down a kill and Norton recorded her service ace. Hellmann tallied another strike, but the Falcons found themselves down 23-16. Air Force scored the next three points, highlighted by a pair of kills from Kurtz, and kept the Utes at set-point for two more, before ultimately falling 25-21.

     

     

    The Utes jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the third set, but Kurtz added a pair of kills to help the Falcons pull within 7-4. Richan picked up the Falcons' next two points, while Hellmann put down another kill. Scores by Kurtz and Stilwell put the Falcons over the 10-point plateau, while Richan added another pair of scores and Stilwell recorded the 40th unassisted block of her career. Kurtz added one final kill, but Utah completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory.

    Air Force returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 13, when it hosts BYU at the Academy at 12 p.m.
