Falcons Fall to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to San Diego State on Thursday, Nov. 8. The Falcons fell in straight 25-20, 25-17, 25-17 sets to the host Aztecs at Peterson Gym in San Diego, Calif.
Freshman Felicia Clement paced the Falcons with 10 kills - a tally just one shy of the match high - and two blocks. Junior Cami Richan, who added seven kills to the Falcons' total, averaged a team-high hitting percentage of .333 (7k-1e-17a). Classmate Josalynn Wise, making her first start of the year as Air Force's setter, posted a season-best 21 assists. Senior Maiya Perich recorded nine digs, while freshmen Rebecca Bates and Rachael Bradley Powers each earned a service ace.
San Diego State earned the first point of the match, but Richan responded with a kill and the teams traded the next four points. A service ace from Bradley Powers gave the Falcons their first lead at the 4-3 mark. An Aztec error gave the Falcons a two-point advantage on the ensuing point, while kills from Clement and sophomore Ayesha Hein, as well as a block by Hein and Richan, helped the Falcons increase their lead to four (10-6). San Diego State scored six of the next seven points to take a 12-11 lead, but Wise recorded a kill to even the set at 12. Richan and sophomore Victoria Foster added kills to put the Falcons ahead 15-14, but three straight scores by SDSU returned the advantage to the home team at the 17-15 mark. Clement recorded back-to-back blocks to put the Falcons up by one (18-17), but San Diego State closed out the set on an 8-2 run to take the opening game by a 25-20 margin.
Air Force earned kills from Clement, Hein and Foster to open the second set, but San Diego State jumped out to a 14-5 lead. Clement tallied a pair of kills and Bates added a service ace, while another kill from Foster put the Falcons over the 10-point mark (16-10). The Falcons traded the next six points with the Aztecs, recording their points off of kills from Richan, freshman Taylor Parker and Clement to put the score at 19-13. Clement and Richan (two) added scores, but San Diego State took the set, 25-17.
Kills from Richan and Foster opened the third set, but the Aztecs scored the next four points to go up 4-2. The Falcons responded, as kills from Richan bookended a score from Foster to put the Falcons ahead 5-4. San Diego State tied the set on the next point and retook the lead on the next score. Clement used kills to keep the Falcons within one at the 10-9, 11-10 and 12-11 marks. Three Aztec errors evened the set at 15, but San Diego State closed out the game on a 10-2 run to complete the sweep with a 25-17 win.
Air Force will make its first appearance to Reno, Nev., on Saturday (Nov. 10) to take on conference opponent Nevada at 1 p.m.
