Falcons Fall to Wyoming in Three

    LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Wyoming on Thursday, Nov. 4, in Laramie, Wyo. Freshman Annalyse Schmitt paced the squad with nine kills and one service ace, while the Falcons fell in straight 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 sets to the host Cowgirls in Mountain West Conference action.

    The Falcons took a 2-1 lead to start the set behind a kill from Schmitt. Wyoming went up 3-2, but senior Nichole Stilwell tied the set at three. The Cowgirls scored seven of the next nine points to take a 10-5 advantage. With Wyoming up 17-9, Schmitt posted a pair of kills to spark a 4-0 run by the Falcons. Senior Jessica Hellmann, who had already dumped one ball over the net for a kill earlier in the set, recorded a second kill in the same fashion during the run, while classmate Caroline Kurtz also added one. Stilwell collected one more score, but Air Force fell by a 25-18 score.

    A block by seniors Emily Frick and Julia Hansen opened the second set. Like the first game, Wyoming took a 3-2 lead, but this time Schmitt tied the score at three. Kurtz evened the score back up at four, while Hellmann's third kill of the night gave the Falcons a 5-4 lead. Hansen and Kurtz posted back-to-back kills, while another kill by Kurtz evened the score at eight. The Cowgirls went ahead 14-9, but Air Force tallied six of the next nine points to pull within two at 17-15. Stilwell put down a pair of kills during that run, while Schmitt collected a service ace. Kurtz and Schmitt added a pair of consecutive scores to bring Air Force within one (18-17). Wyoming regained a three-point lead, but Hansen and Schmitt kept the squad within one at 20-19. Air Force evened the score at 22, before ultimately falling by a narrow 25-23 score.

     

     

    Air Force struck first in the third set, as Richan helped the Falcons to a 2-1 lead. Wyoming scored the next three points, but the Falcons responded with kills from Schmitt, Stilwell and Hellmann to stay within one at 6-5. The Cowgirls scored six of the next eight points to go up 12-7, but the Falcons ended their run with a kill from Richan and a service ace by Kurtz. Air Force also produced back-to-back points from Hansen (kill) and sophomore Maiya Perich (service ace). Kills by Schmitt and Stilwell helped the Falcons cut the Cowgirls lead to 19-14. With Wyoming at match-point (24-17), Air Force rolled off five straight points, including a kill by Richan, before falling 25-21.

    Schmitt led the Falcons with nine kills, while Stilwell and Kurtz each added seven. In addition to her 27 assists, Hellmann connected on four of seven attempts, while committing no errors, for a .571 hitting percentage. Frick paced the Falcons with a pair of assisted blocks, while Perich, wearing the libero's jersey for the first time this season, posted a team-high 13 digs.

    Air Force returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 6, when it faces 14th-ranked Colorado State at 1 p.m. in Fort Collins, Colo.
