LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 Mountain West match to Wyoming on Thursday, Oct. 18, in Laramie, Wyo. The Falcons fell to the Cowgirls in straight 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 sets at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Freshman Maggie Sherrill opened the scoring with the first kill of the match. She added the Falcons' next point, while a kill from classmate Taylor Parker gave the Falcons the 3-2 lead. Wyoming scored five of the next six points to go up 7-5, but the Falcons responded with a 5-0 run, backed by a kill from sophomore Ayesha Hein and four errors by the Cowgirls. Wyoming regained the lead, following a 6-1 run, with junior Cami Richan providing the only offense point for Air Force. The Cowgirls extended their lead to 21-12 following another long scoring run. Freshman Felicia Clement stopped the Cowgirls with a kill and sparked a 4-1 run by the Falcons. Sophomore Hillary Keltner and freshman Raquel Rosas teamed up for a block during the run, while Sherrill and Rosas each added kills. Richan collected one more kill, but the Falcons dropped the opening set by a 25-17 score.
Air Force took another 3-2 lead to start the second set, as Clement put down a pair of scores and Sherrill came up with a solo block. Wyoming used a 6-2 run to double up the Falcons 8-4 and continue to hold a four-point lead at the 10-6 mark. Richan and Keltner collected a pair of kills, while Hein scored a pair of kills to bring Air Force within two (13-11). The Cowgirls went up by five (17-12), before a kill by Parker and a solo block by sophomore Victoria Foster helped bring the Falcons back within two (17-15). Parker added another kill, but Wyoming claimed the set by a 25-19 margin.
Hein scored early, but Wyoming took a 9-5 advantage in the opening minutes of the third set. Air Force evened the score at 10 following a 5-1 run that featured kills from Clement, Sherrill and Parker, a service ace from sophomore Emma Dridge and a block from Keltner and Parker. Kills from Richan kept the score tied at 11 and again at 12, before the Cowgirls strung together four points to go up 16-12. Hein added an additional kill, but the Cowgirls continued to lead 21-16. Sherrill added a pair of kills that helped to bring the Falcons within two at 22-20. A kill from Richan held the Cowgirls at match-point, but Wyoming claimed the final point to secure the 25-22 win.
Hein, Sherrill and Richan paced the Falcons with six kills apiece, with Hein hitting at a team-best .231 clip (6k-3e-13a). Keltner recorded 25 assists, while senior Maiya Perich led the team with 10 digs. Dridge earned the team's lone service ace, while Keltner paced the team with a pair of blocks (both assisted).
Air Force returns to action tomorrow night (Oct. 19), when it travels to Fort Collins, Colo., to take on Colorado State at 7 p.m., at Moby Arena.
