Air Force Falls to New Mexico on the Road

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 Mountain West decision to New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 6, in Albuquerque, N.M. The Falcons dropped the first and third sets by 21-25 margins, while falling 14-25 in the second set.
New Mexico opened the set with a 6-1 run, broken up only by a kill from freshman Felicia Clement. Following an error by the Lobos at the 6-2 mark, Air Force scored 12 or the next 14 points to take a 13-8 lead. During the Falcons' run, sophomore Ayesha Hein put down four kills, while Clement, sophomore Hillary Keltner and classmate Kristen Holt each added one. Junior Cami Richan collected her first kill of the set, as Air Force took a 16-11 advantage. New Mexico used a 5-1 run to cut the lead to one (17-16). Sophomore Kristen Holt collected a kill to stop the Lobos' run, but the home team responded with four straight points to go up 20-18, before Clement collected a kill and senior Maiya Perich added a service ace to even the set at 20. Hein added one more kill, but New Mexico closed out the set with a 5-1 run to take the opening set 25-21.
Following a 6-0 start by the Lobos, Air Force responded with three straight points off of blocks. Holt and freshman Maggie Sherrill claimed the first block, before Clement and Holt teamed up for back-to-back stops. Holt and Clement also each added a kill, while a block from Keltner and Hein brought Air Force within three at 9-6. Richan and Sherrill recorded kills, but New Mexico extended its lead to six (15-9). The pair posted a pair of back-to-back scores, but New Mexico closed out the set with a 25-14 win.
Backed by a kill from freshman Raquel Rosas, the Falcons claimed the first two points of the third set, and used a block from Clement and Hein to take a 4-2 lead. The Lobos went ahead 7-5, but the Falcons used five straight points to go up 10-7. Richan tallied two kills during the run and teamed up with Rosas for a block. Another kill from Richan kept the Falcons up 12-10, but the Lobos came back to tie the set at 12. Following a tie at 13-all, New Mexico scored the next five points (18-13). Sherrill and Richan each added two kills, while Keltner and Rosas teamed up for a block, but the Lobos completed the sweep with a 25-21 win.
Richan led the Falcons with nine kills, while Hein connected at a team-leading .312 clip. Keltner recorded a team-best 27 assists and 10 digs for her 12th double-double of the year. Clement and Holt collected three blocks apiece.
Air Force returns to the Academy next week for a pair of matches. The Falcons will host conference newcomer Nevada on Thursday, Oct. 11, before facing San Diego State on Saturday, Oct. 13.
