Errors Doom Falcons in Loss at Utah

    SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - In its first road trip of the season, the Air Force volleyball team was swept by Utah in Mountain West Conference action on Thursday, Sept. 25, in Salt Lake City. Utah, who is receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches' Poll, trumped the Falcons by 25-9, 25-17, 25-13 margin at Crimson Court. Air Force falls to 4-10 (0-3 MWC) on the year, while Utah picked up its first conference win of the season to improve to 8-4 (1-2 MWC).

    Senior Jasamine Pettie was the Falcons top offensive threat, recording six of the team's 19 kills. Those six kills were tied for the best by any player on either side of the net. Junior Katie Batchelder, who led the Falcons with a .133 hitting percentage, added five kills of her own.

    Sophomores Jessica Hellmann and Stephanie Stanford accounted for respective assist totals of nine and seven, while Hellmann, senior Kristina Stewart and freshman Victoria Martinez each tallied three digs. In addition, Hellmann and classmate Nichole Stilwell each posted a solo block, while junior Michelle Harrington added a pair of assisted stops.

    Errors doomed the Falcons, as they committed 22 attacking errors and nine service errors. Serving woes plagued both teams, as the two squads combined for 21 errors from the line. A strong attack by the Utes (.403 hitting percentage) cemented the Falcons' loss.

    The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they travel to Provo, Utah, to take on 25th-ranked BYU at 7 p.m. The match will be shown at 10:30 p.m. (MST) on BYU-TV, with another airing planned for Sunday, Sept. 28, on the Mtn - Mountain West Sports Network.
