Falcons Swept by San Diego State
Sept. 20, 2008
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Although the Falcons mounted a furious rally in the third set, the Air Force volleyball team was swept in straight sets by San Diego State on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Academy's Clune Arena. The Falcons, who fell to 4-9 (0-2 MWC) on the season, dropped consecutive 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 sets to the Aztecs, who improve to 4-7 (1-0 MWC). Senior Jasamine Pettie led all players on both sides of the net with 12 kills, while sophomore Nichole Stilwell added nine. Stilwell paced the Falcons with a .375 hitting percentage, connecting on nine of 16 attempts, while committing just three errors. Pettie's classmate, Kristina Stewart, and junior Michelle Harrington led the team with two blocks each. Stewart collected a solo and assisted stop, while Harrington tallied two assisted blocks. Sophomore Jessica Hellmann tallied 30 of the team's 36 assists, while freshman Victoria Martinez recorded 13 digs. Sophomore Kelly Spencer nearly broke the 10-dig plateau, as she accumulated nine. Martinez also added the Falcons' lone service ace. Although the Falcons tallied more kills than their Aztec counterparts (38-37), San Diego State out-blocked Air Force by a 9-4 margin. Air Force also tallied more assists (36-33) and digs (41-28) than the Aztecs. After a four-week, 13-match homestand, Air Force will leave the Academy for a pair of conference matches. The Falcons will travel to Salt Lake City to face Utah on Thursday, Sept. 25, before heading to Provo on Saturday, Sept. 27 to face BYU.
