GREELEY, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team suffered a narrow 3-2 loss to South Dakota this afternoon (Sept. 16) in Greeley, Colo., as it concluded the non-conference portion of its season at the Hampton Inn and Suites Northern Colorado Classic. The Falcons fell by 12-25, 25-17, 27-25, 18-25, 13-15 scores in their final contest at Bank of Colorado Arena and dropped to 7-7 on the season.
Air Force combined for a season-high 13.0 blocks on the day. Senior Piper Heineck tied for the match lead with seven blocks (all assisted), while freshman Cambria Galloway added six (one solo, five assisted) and classmate Kathleen Medill tallied four (one solo, three assisted).
Sophomore Denise Ssozi and junior Shanleigh Conlan recorded double-doubles in the contest, as Ssozi was one of three Falcons to surpass the 10-kill plateau in the two-hour match. Ssozi registered a match-best 16 kills, while junior Abigail Miksch (15) and Heineck (13) also reached double-digit kill marks. Ssozi earned her double-double with the addition of 10 digs, while Conlan accounted for 24 assists and 15 digs. Freshman Alex King, who joined the pair with double-digit dig marks, paced the Falcons with 17 digs, and Conlan rounded out the Falcons’ scoring leaders with one service ace.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Ssozi was named to the all-tournament team.
With non-conference action now complete, Air Force opens the Mountain West portion of its season next week. The Falcons begin a four-match homestand at Cadet East on Thursday, Sept. 21, when they host Nevada at 6:30 p.m.
