GREELEY, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team split the opening day of the Hampton Inn and Suites Northern Colorado Classic on Friday, Sept. 15, as it rebounded from a 0-3 loss to the host Bears in the morning to sweep Arkansas Pine Bluff in the nightcap.
In the Falcons' first contest at Bank of Colorado Arena -- a 14-25, 19-25, 21-25 setback to Northern Colorado -- sophomore Denise Ssozi paced the team with nine kills, while junior Abigail Miksch added six. Freshman Alex King, one of two Falcons to record an ace in the match (Miksch), led the team with 13 digs, while senior Piper Heineck collected a team-high three blocks (all assisted). Junior Sarah Hellman rounded out the Falcons' stat leaders with 10 assists.
Hitting .302 as a team, Air Force capped Friday's action with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-18 victory over Arkansas Pine Bluff. Freshman Kathleen Medill hit at a match-high clip of .667 in the nightcap, tallying eight kills on 12 attempts with no errors. Classmate Brynn Sulte added a .429 average (4k-1e-7a), while Heineck (.375, 4k-1e-8a) and Miksch (.308, 6k-2e-13a) also hit over 300. Ssozi tallied 13 kills to lead the Falcons for the second-straight match, while freshman Andi Ahlers and junior Shanleigh Conlan registered 12 assists apiece. Defensively, King posted a match-high eight digs, while Medill and Heineck each tallied three blocks (three assisted stops for Medill, one solo and two assisted stops for Heineck).
The Falcons close out the Hampton Inn and Suites Northern Colorado Classic -- and their non-conference schedule -- tomorrow (Sept. 16), when they face South Dakota at 10:00 a.m.
