Air Force Wins Five-Set Thriller with Kent State

    USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Backed by four players with double-digit kills, the Air Force volleyball team posted a thrilling 3-2 victory over Kent State on Friday, Sept. 12, at the Air Force Invitational at the Academy. The Falcons improved to 2-6 on the season with 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 17-25, 16-14 victory over the Golden Flashes.

    The Falcons' senior duo of Kristina Stewart and Jasamine Pettie led the squad with nearly half of the team's kills. Stewart's 16-kill output is the second-best single-match for the Falcons this season. Pettie accounted for 15 kills and had one of three solo blocks for Air Force.

    Junior Katie Batchelder lit up the scoreboard with 13 kills, while sophomore Nichole Stilwell collected 12. Stilwell, who connected on 12 of 26 attempts, while committing just three errors, led the Falcons with a .346 hitting percentage.

    Sophomore Jessica Hellmann led the Falcons with 44 assists, while classmate Stephanie Stanford added 10 helpers. The 61 assists are a season-high for the Falcons, as were the 67 total kills.

    Defensively, Air Force accounted for 73 total digs. The Falcons were paced by freshman Victoria Martinez, who tallied 17. Stewart added 13 for her first double-double of the season. Stilwell, Batchelder and sophomore Kelly Spencer each added eight digs.

    Juniors Michelle Harrington led the Falcons with a pair of blocks, including one of three solo stops for Air Force. Stewart and Pettie accounted for the other, while Hellmann teamed up with Harrington on the assisted stop. Hellmann also added the only service ace for Air Force.

     

     

    The Falcons return to action tonight (Sept. 12), when they host Florida Atlantic at Clune Arena. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m., but the time may be later based on the other matches.
