Errors Doom Air Force in 3-0 Loss to Tennessee State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Tennessee State during the second day of action (Saturday, Sept. 11) at the Tiger Invitational in Memphis, Tenn. A season-high 13 reception errors haunted the Falcons, who dropped consecutive 25-17, 25-12, 25-18 sets to the Tigers.
Tennessee State scored the first six points, before senior Nichole Stilwell put down a pair of back-to-back kills to get the Falcons on the board. The Tigers maintained their sizable lead, despite an ace from senior Jessica Hellmann and kills from senior Caroline Kurtz, freshman Caitie Campbell and senior Julia Hansen. A kill from freshman Annalyse Schmitt put the Falcons over the 10-point plateau. Kurtz added three more kills, but TSU took the first set by a 25-17 margin.
The Tigers used a 5-1 run to open the second set. Kills from Hellmann, Kurtz and Campbell brought the Falcons within two at 6-4, but a 7-1 run by Tennessee State saw the Falcons trailing by a 13-5 score. Schmitt added a pair of back-to-back kills, while a pair of attacking errors allowed the Falcons to get within five at 14-9. Stilwell added one last kill, as Tennessee State won the set by a 25-12 score.
Air Force found itself down 3-0 in the third set, before Kurtz and Hansen added a pair of kills. A service ace by senior Kelly Spencer helped to tie the set at four, but TSU responded with an 8-1 run. Schmitt tallied the Falcons' lone kill during that run. Air Force added kills from Stilwell and Kurtz, while freshman Josalynn Wise recorded a service ace. A kill from sophomore Preslee Maki helped the Falcons pull within two (18-16), but the Tigers used another late run to put the set away, 25-18.
Kurtz led the Falcons with 10 kills, while Spencer and sophomore Maiya Perich each tallied a team-best 11 digs. Hellmann recorded 11 assists, while Wise added 10 helpers. Spencer, Wise, Hellmann and Stilwell each recorded a service ace.
Air Force returns to action this evening, when it takes on host Memphis in the final match of the Tiger Invitational at 7 p.m.
