Air Force Drops Four-Set Match to Akron

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Despite a strong performance in the first set, the Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Akron during its first match of the Air Force Classic Volleyball Tournament on Friday, Sept. 5, at the Academy's Clune Arena. The Falcons won the first set, 25-20, before falling 25-22, 25-20, 25-13 to the visiting Zips. Sophomore Caroline Kurtz led the Falcons with 10 kills, while classmate Nichole Stilwell added nine. The duo combined for nearly half of the Falcons' 41 total kills. Junior Michelle Harrington, who posted a team-high .353 hitting percentage, tied with Stilwell for a match-best five blocks. Sophomore setter Jessica Hellmann collected 32 assists and a match-best three service aces. Her single-match ace production is the best on the team this year. Classmate Kelly Spencer posted a team-leading 11 digs, while freshman Victoria Martinez added 10. The Falcons' 45 total digs is a new season best. The Falcons return to action later tonight, when they face Montana State. Please note, the tournament is running behind schedule.
