Caroline Kurtz Notches Double-Double in Falcons' 3-1 Loss to Fresno State

OREM, Utah - Senior Caroline Kurtz tallied her second double-double of the season, as the Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Fresno State at a neutral site match in Orem, Utah, on Thursday, Sept. 2. After falling to the Bulldogs 25-19 and 25-23 in the first two sets, Air Force rebounded to take a 25-20 win in the third set. Fresno State ultimately clinched the match with a 25-13 win in the fourth set.
Air Force found itself in an early 6-1 deficit, before Kurtz tallied a kill and service ace. Classmates Nichole Stilwell and Julia Hansen teamed up for a block to pull the score within four at 10-6. The Bulldogs increased its lead to seven (13-6), but the Falcons responded with six of the next seven points. Following a pair of errors by Fresno State, freshman Annalyse Schmitt added a kill, classmate Josalynn Wise recorded a service ace and Stilwell posted another score. Freshman Cami Richan, competing just minutes from her hometown, recorded the first kill of her career. Kurtz added another pair of kills, while Schmitt and Stilwell each added one. Sophomore Maiya Perich posted the Falcons' third ace of the set, but Fresno State claimed the game by a 25-19 score.
The Falcons jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the second set. Kurtz, who teamed up with freshman Caitie Campbell for a block, joined Stilwell with kills during the opening run. Stilwell and Hansen added a pair of kills as Air Force went up 9-5, but Fresno State took the lead at the 12-11 mark. Air Force tied the set on the ensuing point, as Stilwell sent a line drive toward the Bulldogs' libero. Campbell added a kill to give the Falcons a 15-14 lead, but Fresno State retook the lead at 21-17. Schmitt, Stilwell and Kurtz added kills to help the Falcons pull with two at 24-22 and a kill by Hansen brought the squad within one. Fresno State scored the final point for the 25-23.
Kurtz once again posted a pair of kills as Air Force opened the third set with a 6-4 lead. The Bulldogs tied the set at six, but Air Force never trailed, as Schmitt put down three straight kills to move the Falcons' advantage to three (9-6). Stilwell and Kurtz combined for several kills, and Stilwell added a service ace, as the Falcons started to pull away. A pair of kills by Hansen capped off the Falcons' third set with a 25-20 victory.
Air Force started the fourth set with a 3-2 advantage, but Fresno State quickly took over, scoring eight of the next nine points to put Air Force down 10-4. Hansen and Campbell teamed up for a block to stop the Bulldogs run, before Hansen and Schmitt added kills and Perich recorded her second ace of the night. Stilwell, Kurtz, Campbell and Schmitt each posted another kill, but Air Force fell to Fresno State by a 25-13 margin.
Kurtz led the Falcons with 16 kills, while Stilwell added 11. With 12 digs, Kurtz recorded her second double-double of the season and the 14th of her career. Senior Kelly Spencer led the team defensively with 17 digs, while Hansen collected four assisted blocks. Wise recorded 26 of the team's 41 assists. Highlighted by three from Stilwell, the Falcons combined for seven total aces. Perich added a pair, while Kurtz and Wise each recorded one.
Air Force returns to the Shurian Family Activity Center in Orem, Utah, tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 3) when it faces host Utah Valley at 4 p.m.
