Chantraruk Advances At ITA Central Region Tournament


    Air Force senior Kristel Chantraruk advanced to the second round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Tournament by defeating Marjolien Van Dongen from Tulsa University, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, Thursday in Omaha, Neb.

    Chantraruk will play Renata Stoop of Boise State, the ninth-seeded player in the tournament, at 1 p.m. Central Time on Friday, Nov. 4. Stoop beat Ia Zozrashvili of Southwest Missouri State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. The winner of that match will play her round of 16 match at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

    Falcons Brooke Parsons and Laura Nigro lost their first round singles matches at the tournament, and will compete in the consolation bracket. Parsons fell to the 14th-seed Monica Sekulov of Kansas, 6-2, 7-6, while Nigro, who qualified for the main draw by winning two matches on Wednesday, lost to Karoline Graubig of Colorado, the No. 12 seed, 6-4, 6-3. Both players play their consolation matches Friday morning.

    In doubles action, the Falcons' No. 1 team of sophomores Kelli O'Bryant and Heather Shelby defeated Frita Kareld and Irini Kotoglou of Utah, 8-3 in the first round before falling 8-1 to the No. 7 seeded team of Elizaveta Khoudoiarova and Dominique Reynolds of BYU. Parsons and Nigro won their first round match, 8-2, over Mara Berzins and Karoline Graubig of Colorado, but dropped an 8-4 second round decision to Eva Novotna and Petra Sedlmajerova of Kansas State, the tournament's No. 2 seed.
