Nigro, Bushey to Open at ITA Regional Tournament on Thursday
Oct. 22, 2003 Air Force tennis players Laura Nigro and Kat Bushey play their first singles matches Thursday in the ITA Central Region Women's Championships held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nigro, a senior, will play a qualifier in the first round of the main draw on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Bushey, a sophomore, will face Whitney Eber in the first round at 11 a.m. Three Falcons played in the qualifying rounds on Wednesday hoping to advance to the main draw. Only one, freshman Karissa Walker, made it past the first round. Walker defeated Katerina Lozanova of St. Louis, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round before falling to Kristen Steinbock of Kansas in a tough three-setter, 2-6, 6-1, (10-6) in the second round. Senior Gina Black and freshman Kelly Morgan were defeated in the first round of qualifying. Black, the fourth-seed in qualifying, was upset by Erica Josbena of Missouri, 6-2, 6-1, while Morgan fell to Rachelle Ferguson of Utah State, 6-0, 6-1. Air Force's top two doubles teams will also be in action on Thursday. Nigro and Black, who advanced to the semifinals of last weekend's St. Mary's College Invitational, play Allison Hansen and Cinthia Saucedo of Utah, while Bushey and Walker face Christina Klokinis and Karen Kmiec of Northern Arizona.
The two singles finalists and the doubles champions will advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held Nov. 6-9 at the University of Michigan.
