Bushey, Abayan Stun Top Seed at Region Championships


    Salt Lake City, Utah -
    Air Force's top women's doubles team of senior Kat Bushey and freshman Christine Abayan upset the No. 1 seeds Thursday at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships. The Falcon duo defeated the top-seeded team of Dolly Chang and Lauren Jones of BYU, 8-4, in the second round.
    Bushey and Abayan won their first-round match over Liz Garza and Maja Stanojevic of Missouri State, 8-5, and will face Emily Kwok and Leigh Walsh of Utah in the round of 16 on Friday at 4 p.m. The Air Force pair is now 7-2 this fall.
    "Kat and Christine both executed the basics extremely well and capitalized when they got the momentum on their side," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "This marks the first nationally ranked win for them by defeating the No. 45 ranked team in the nation."
    Bushey dropped her first-round singles match on Thursday, falling to Monica Milevski of Colorado, 6-1, 6-2. She will face Nuria Lozano of Montana State in the consolation round on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
