U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. – Four Falcons are slated to compete in the women’s ITA Western Regionals, Oct. 11-15, at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. Each day will begin with doubles play at 9 a.m. MT, followed by singles play. The Mountain Region comprises of 19 teams and hundreds of student-athletes showcasing the event this week.
Representing Air Force at the event is two doubles teams and four singles. Fifth-seeded doubles team, TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel, will have a bye in the first round of action while Meredith Laskey and Meredith Jones will take on Northern Colorado’s duo, Mora/Bryant-Otake.
All four Falcons will compete in singles action following the doubles rounds. No. 8-seeded, Fumagalli, will have a bye in the first round of singles action while Jones, a 17-32 seed, will face off against Coburn of Idaho State. Barnickel will take on Delic of Nevada and Laskey will take on Parker of Washington State. Barnickel and Laskey are unseeded.
The event is one of twelve regional tournaments across the country in which the winner of singles and doubles contests earn a bid to the Fall ITA National Championships, representing the top-24 players in the country for each event, in Palm Desert, Calif., November 1-5.
“This is our big tournament that we gear up for the fall,” explained head coach Kim Gidley. “Although it is an individual qualifier, it is a tournament that can show how deep you can be as a team in the spring.”
“There are no easy matches,” continued Gidley. “You have to win seven matches in a row in doubles and eight matches in a row in singles to make it to the national tournament. Anything can happen and you have to be ready to play match by match for up to five days.”
