Air Force seniors Laura Nigro and Gina Black combined to win two of their three doubles matches Friday during the first day of the 2003 USAFA Women's Tennis Invitational at the Academy. Joining Air Force at the three-day tournament are Denver, Wyoming, Texas Tech and McNeese State.

Nigro and Black started the day with an 8-0 victory over Magali Risoleo of McNeese State and Jennifer Hancock of Wyoming. Different teams were paired together due to injuries. Later in the day, Nigro and Black defeated Hancock and Yuliani Santi of Wyoming, 8-6. The pair's only loss of the day was an 8-3 decision to Jenny Trettin and Barb Kourim of Denver.

AFA's Kat Bushey, a sophomore, and freshman Karissa Walker also won two doubles matches on Friday. The duo beat Madeleine Hakansson and Marina Gando of McNeese State, 8-5, and Denver's Marisa Mechem and Rachel Sackmasater, 8-6. Bushey and Walker dropped their last match of the day, losing 9-8 (9-7) to Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski of Wyoming.

Junior Katie Tomkie and freshman Kelly Morgan defeated Amy Senko and Gwen Moser of Wyoming, 9-8 (7-2) for their lone victory of the day. The doubles portion of the tournament is being played as a round-robin with a regular dual-match format.

In singles, Walker, Morgan, and freshmen Kellie Crail and Liza Vaccaro all lost on Friday. There are four flighted brackets for the singles competition. Nigro, Black and Bushey will begin their singles matches on Saturday.

Two rounds of singles and one round of doubles are on tap for Saturday, Oct. 11.
