Falcons Finish Doubles at USAFA Invitational
The Air Force women's tennis team completed the doubles portion and began singles play at the USAFA Invitational Saturday at the Academy's outdoor courts.
After losing their first match on Friday, Air Force's top team of senior Kat Bushey and freshman Christine Abayan won three in a row, including an 8-1 victory over Karolina Rowinski and Corina Lazar of Wyoming on Saturday, to win the consolation bracket in flight "1". Bushey and Abayan are now 8-3 so far during the fall season. In singles play on Saturday, Bushey and sophomore Lauren Wilson each went 1-1 in the top flight. Bushey opened with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Wendi Webster of Wichita State, but fell in the second round to Suzanan Maksovic of Denver, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Wilson, meanwhile, rebounded from a first-round 6-1, 6-0 loss to Monica Milewski of Denver with an impressive 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Wyoming's Rowinski in the consolation bracket. Junior Karissa walker also split a pair of matches in flight "2", defeating Amy Senko of Wyoming, 6-1, 6-4, in the consolation bracket. Freshmen Christine Abayan and Meghan Kiser each went 1-1 in flight "3" on Saturday for the Falcons. Kiser beat Andrea House of Wyoming, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round, while Abayan handily defeated Carmon Vasos of Northern Colorado , 6-2, 6-1. Each player lost her second match of the day. Junior Kelly Morgan was the only Falcons to post two victories on Saturday. She opened play in flight "4" with a victory over Jessica Jones of Colorado State. Morgan won the first set, 7-6 and was leading 2-1 in the second when Jones had to retire. Morgan then defeated Genevieve Spink of Wichita State in a thrilling three setter, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. Sophomore Erika Shortridge also posted a victory for Air Force on Saturday, defeating Christina Shelly of Northern Colorado, 7-5, 6-1. Singles play will continue on Sunday, Oct. 9, beginning at 8 a.m.
