Falcons Complete Day One of USAFA Invitational

    Two rounds of singles and one round of doubles comprised the first day of the 2004 USAFA Women's Tennis Invitational Friday at the Academy. Air Force's No. 1 player, junior Kat Bushey, will battle for third-place in the top flight on Saturday after splitting a pair of matches, while sophomore Liza Vaccaro won both singles matches in her flight.

    Bushey won her first-round match in come-from-behind fashion, defeating Patricia Chien of Wyoming, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Bushey then fell in the top-flight semifinals, 7-6, 6-2, to Michelle Heidbrink of New Mexico. Heidbrink will face Lynzee Kever of Colorado in the finals of Flight 1 on Saturday, while Bushey will play Rachel Sackmaster of Denver in the third-place match.

    Vaccaro, meanwhile, defeated Elisa Bonner of New Mexico, 6-4, 7-5, and Kimberly Wollett of Georgia Southern, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, in the round-robin format of Flight 6. Vaccaro's final singles match will be against Teri Wilkerson of UTEP on Saturday.

    Air Force freshman Lauren Wilson will play in the fifth-place match in flight 3 against Jasmin Singh of Colorado State after defeating Kim Romero of Wyoming, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in the consolation semis. Fellow freshman Erika Shortridge and junior Jane McDonald also posted singles victory for Air Force on Friday. Shortridge defeated Jessica Vanderkooi of Georgia Southern, 6-0, 6-2 in Flight 7, while McDonald rallied to beat Brooke Stern of Colorado, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, in Flight 8.

    Play resumes on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Academy outdoor tennis courts.
