Falcons Finish Strong at Texas Tech Open
The Air Force women's tennis team won seven of its nine matches Sunday at the final day of competition of the Scarborough Specialties Open in Lubbock, Texas. Senior Kat Bushey and freshman Christine Abayan captured the consolation title in the top doubles flight with an 8-6 victory over Katherine Palider and Sandra Spirta of UTEP.
The Falcons were 6-1 in singles matches, including junior Kelly Morgan winning for the fourth time in as many matches at the Open. After winning the flight "D" title on Saturday, Morgan defeated Deanna Carillo of Texas Tech, 3-6, 6-2, (10-4) on Sunday. Junior Karissa Walker and Meghan Kiser each won in three sets over Palider (6-4, 4-6, 11-9) and Sandra Vucic (3-6, 6-1, 10-2), respectively. Kiser's win gave her the consolation title for flight "C".
Other winners on Sunday were Abayan, who beat TU-San Antonio's Monica Drabkova, 6-4, 6-3, and sophomores Lauren Wilson, a 6-2, 6-1 victor over Elizabeth Korinek of Abilene Christian, and Erika Shortridge, who beat Eva Sylvester of UT-San Antonio, 7-5, 6-3.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend as they host the USAFA Invitational, which begins Friday, Oct. 7 at the Academy.
