Womens' Tennis at BYU Invitational
(Oct. 2) - The United States Air Force Academy was in action for the second week in a row. This week saw the Lady Falcons travel to Provo, Utah for the BYU Invitational. The teams competing were: Brigham Young University (BYU),
Air Force Academy (AF), Colorado State Univ. (CSU), Univ. of Utah (UU), Utah State (USU), Washington State Univ. (WSU), Weber State (WS), and Wyoming (WY).
"This is a strong tournament with lots of opportunities to play a lot of matches," said Falcons' head coach Kim Gidley. "From last week to this week, I saw a lot of improvement in our singles. If you make a big improvement like that, with only a few days in between tournaments - you know it's all mental. That's what we need to work on now, is being smarter players and mentally tougher." "If I look at where we were last year in this tournament and where we finished this weekend - it is a big jump," said Gidley. "Last year we did not win a set with our no. one and two singles players. This year our top two players won six matches combined. C2C Brooke Parsons won the consolation - defeating Washington State and Wyoming's no. one players in straight sets, while C1C Kristel Chuntraruk defeated Colorado State's no. one player in straight sets. Last year, we only won a few matches in all the draws. This year we saw C4C Laura Nigro make it to the semis of the flight two draw, and C3C Heather Shelby make it to the semis of the flight three draw for the second week in a row. C2C Ashley Gee also had a good showing, defeating Colorado State's no. three player in straight sets - and then lost a close match to BYU's no. three player," said Gidley. "The doubles was a little more disappointing," added Gidley. "Last week I felt we executed and competed well in the doubles. This week, we did not do a lot of anything. That is definitely an area we will continue to work on." The next outing for the Lady Falcons will be in New York - October 20-22 to compete against ARMY. Go AIR FORCE...Beat ARMY!
