Kelly Morgan Wins Flight at Texas Tech Tournament


    Air Force junior Kelly Morgan continued her outstanding play at the Scarborough Specialties Women's Tennis Open Saturday in Lubbock, Texas, by capturing a come from behind three-set victory to win the flight "D" title. Morgan, who trailed 5-1 in the third-set 10-point tiebreak against Vicky Michaud of UTEP, won nine of the last 12 points to win the match, 3-6, 6-2 (10-8).

    Coming back from deficits was the norm for Air Force on Saturday, as junior Karissa Walker rallied twice to defeat Abilene Christian's Sara Baker in the consolation round flight "A". Down 5-2 in the first set, Walker captured five straight games to win, 7-5. After losing the second set in a tiebreak and falling behind 6-2 in the third-set tiebreak, Walker dug deep to win, 10-8.

    In flight "C" consolation action, freshman Meghan Kiser, got off to a slow start against Eva Sylvester of UT-San Antonio, losing the first set, 6-0, but rallied to win the match, 6-4 (10-8).

    Other singles winners on Saturday were senior Kat Bushey, who defeated Terri Wilkerson of UTEP, 7-5, 6-4 in the flight "A" consolation bracket and sophomore Lauren Wilson, who beat UT-San Antonio's Monica Drabkova, 6-2, 6-3, in the flight "B" consolation

    In doubles play, the Falcons' top team of Bushey and freshman Christine Abayan won a pair of matches, defeating Holly Lindloff and Elizabeth Korinek of Abilene Christian, 8-1, before rallying from a 6-2 deficit to win the final six games to beat Amber Brightly and Danielle King of UTEP, 8-6.

    Morgan also went 2-0 in doubles Saturday with Wilson, as they defeated two teams from Abilene Christian.

    "Today was the best performance we had all year," said head coach Kim Gidley. "Yesterday we had some tight matches, but we did not convert. Today, we had come from behind victories in several matches and it is great to see this fighting spirit this early in the season."
