Lorena Arias of Washington State survived two match points and a four-hour marathon match to defeat Dominique Lemperle of Colorado, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 to win the championship match in flight one of the 2002 USAFA Invitational Sunday at the Air Force Academy.
Arias fought off two match points with Lemperle serving at 5-4 in the third set to even the match at 5-all, and broke Lemperle at 6-5 to win the match. Due to the length of the match and travel plans, the championship match in the doubles flight one bracket between two Washington State teams was not played.
Kelli O'Bryant and Gina Black had the best finishes of the Air Force players. O'Bryant placed sixth in the flight two bracket, while Black was sixth in flight three. Orsi Sallai of Washington State won the flight three singles bracket, and teamed with Melanie Humphrey to win the flight two doubles bracket.
The Air Force women's team is idle for a week before traveling to the east coast for the Clemson Invitational, Oct. 11-13.
