Falcons Play Well at Wyoming Invite
The Air Force women's tennis team opened the 2005-06 season Friday at the Wyoming Cowgirl Invite in Laramie, Wyo. The Falcons played singles against Montana State Friday morning, winning five of the six matches against the Bobcats. In the afternoon, Air Force played New Mexico State in singles and Wyoming in doubles.
AFA's No. 1 player, senior Kat Bushey, came back from a 5-2 deficit to defeat MSU's Nicole Leutolf, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomores Lauren Wilson and Erika Shortridge and freshmen Christine Abayan and Meghan Kiser also won their matches in straight sets. Abayan was the only Falcon to beat NMSU, defeating Violaine Rollet, 6-3, 6-1. In fact, Abayan won her doubles match as well, pairing with Bushey to beat Andrea House and Gwen Moser of Wyoming, 8-6. "This was a very positive day for us," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Last year we only won one match against Montana State and this year we won five. Both freshmen (Kiser and Abayan) made their Air Force debuts and played well. Overall, it was a great fighting effort and we showed drastic improvement from last year."
