U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - With the 2017-18 college tennis season kicking into high gear, Oracle and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced the 2017 Oracle ITA Collegiate Tennis Women's Division I Preseason Rankings on Tuesday, September 12, 2017.
New Braunfels, Texas, native TJ Fumagalli checked in at No. 106 in the nation in singles. Elizabeth Barnickel joins Fumagalli at No. 52 in the nation in doubles. Fumagalli now becomes the first Air Force Academy women’s tennis player to be nationally ranked in both singles and doubles.
Last season the Fumagalli-Barnickel duo became the first Academy women’s doubles team to be ranked. This year, the pair continues taking strides forward as they are now the the highest ranked doubles team in program history, topping their previous national ranking of No. 86.
The national rankings put Fumagalli (singles) and Fumagalli-Barnickel (doubles) in the top-five percent of all singles and doubles teams in the country, respectively.
“This is just a starting point,” exclaimed head coach Kim Gidley. “As a coach, I look forward to giving our cadet-athletes opportunities to excel in their sport and represent the Air Force Academy at its highest level. I am very excited for both of them.”
Fumagalli, Barnickel and the women’s tennis squad will take to the courts for the first time this season, Sept. 15-16, at the Air Force Invitational, hosted at the outdoor tennis courts of Cadet Gymnasium, USAFA, CO. Matches are slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. MT.
