Air Force senior Hannah Dake captured the women's open title at the 2012 Lipton Tea & Honey Aquatennial Tennis Classic last week in Minneapolis, Minn. Dake, who also won the title in 2008, defeated Gonzaga recruit Melanie Yates, 7-5, 6-4, in the final.
"I am so excited for Hannah to win such a prestigious tournament," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "It is tough for our cadet-athletes to stay on top of their games, so when they compete during their leave, it demonstrates how good they want to be. Hannah had some tight matches and really gutted out some wins. This should be huge for her confidence going into the fall."
Dake, from Excelsior, Minn., produced one of the biggest upsets at the tournament in the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over top-seeded Marina McCollum, a teaching pro from Des Moines, Iowa. McCollum was ranked No. 2 in the country last year in the USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) Women's Open Singles rankings.
Dake was 19-15 overall in singles for the Falcons last season and produced an impressive 15-8 dual match record, including an 11-7 mark at the No. 5 position. She also teamed with sophomore Natasha Rizvi for a 14-4 doubles record.
