Air Force falls to New Mexico, 4-0, at MWC Championships

The Air Force women's tennis team dropped its first round match at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships Thursday, falling to top-seed New Mexico, 4-0. The Falcons, seeded eighth, will face fifth-seeded Colorado State on Friday, April 30 in the consolation round. CSU lost to host San Diego State, 4-1.

New Mexico won the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. AFA seniors Laura Nigro and Gina Black fell at the No. 1 position, 8-2, to the nation's 23rd-ranked team of Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski. UNM clinched the point when Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink beat Miclynn Crail and Liza Vaccaro, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 match was then halted.

New Mexico cruised through the singles matches without losing a set. Lukowski was the first off the court, defeating Katie Tomkie, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot, while Tjasa Suvak knocked off AFA Freshman Kelly Morgan, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. Iva Gersic clinched the match for the Lobos with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Kat Bushey at No. 2. The other three singles matches were then halted.

Air Force fell to 13-13 this season with the loss, while UNM improved to 19-3.
