Falcons Close Regular Season With 4-0 Loss to No. 27 BYU

The Air Force women's tennis team closed out its 2006 regular season Saturday morning with a 4-0 loss to 27th-ranked BYU, 4-0, at the Academy. The Falcons finished the regular season with a 9-17 overall record and 1-7 in the Mountain West Conference, while BYU finished 18-6 overall and 6-2 in league play.

As they did several times this season, Air Force senior Kat Bushey and freshman Christine Abayan won the No. 1 doubles match, downing Dolly Chang and Sofia Holden, 8-2. The pair improved to 28-13 overall and 17-9 at the No. 1 spot, including a 4-4 mark against MWC opponents.

BYU captured the other two doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Anastasia Sourkova and Jennifer Miccoli beat AFA's team of sophomore Lauren Wilson and freshman Meghan Kiser, 8-1, at No. 2, while Lauren Jones and Hanni Deters took the No. 3 match, 8-2, over junior Kelly Morgan and sophomore Erika Shortridge.

In singles, Sourkova gave BYU a 2-0 lead with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wilson at the No. 2 position. Chang beat Shortridge at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-3 and Holden downed Abayan, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3 to claim the victory for the Cougars.

At that point, the other three matches were halted, including the No. 1 match between Bushey, playing her final match at the Academy, and Jones, with each player winning a set, 6-4.

Air Force will be the eighth-seed at the MWC Championships and will face ninth-seed Wyoming on Wednesday, April 26 in San Diego, Calif.
