Falcons Lose to No. 34 SDSU, 5-2
San Diego State's 34th-ranked women's tennis team won its third straight match with a 5-2 victory over Air Force Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.. The win improved SDSU's record to 14-6 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain West Conference, while Air Force fell to 9-15 overall and 1-5 in league play.
The Aztecs claimed the doubles point as they won two of three matches. SDSU's top doubles pairing of Dita Hauerlandova and Sisse Nielsen defeated senior Kat Bushey and freshman Christine Abayan, 9-7, while Alesya Vidov and Milana Yusupov toppled Air Force's No. 2 duo of freshman Meghan Kiser and sophomore Lauren Wilson, 8-1, to give the Aztecs an early 1-0 lead. Junior Kelly Morgan and sophomore Erika Shortridge captured the No. 3 doubles match for AFA, beatingEsther Cadua and Yuki Hagiwara, 8-6. In singles, Nielsen made quick work of Shortridge at No. 4 as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win. The Aztecs took control of the match when Vidov posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Wilson at No. 2, giving SDSU a three-point cushion. Hauerlandova secured the match when she came away with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bushey at No. 1. Air Force recorded its first team point when Abayan won a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8, against Yusupov at No. 3 and then followed it with another three-set effort as Morgan downed Cadua, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot. With the match already decided, Hagiwara handed SDSU its fifth team point as she ended up on the winning side of a 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 performance over Kiser at No. 6.
