Air Force Defeats Arkansas State, 6-1, in Women's Tennis


    Air Force's women's tennis team swept three doubles matches and won five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over Arkansas State Friday at the Academy's indoor tennis courts.

    The Falcons, 12-11 this season, earned the doubles point with three dominant wins. Kristel Chuntraruk and Gina Black started things off with an 8-3 victory over Gija Geme and Megan McCoy at No. 1 doubles. Brooke Parsons and Laura Nigro followed suit at the No. 2 position, defeating Magui Cibils and Candice Meyer, 8-3. Heather Shelby and Kelli O'Bryant completed the sweep for the Falcons, beating Siobhan Byrne and Cherie Pettersson, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot.

    Chuntraruk was the only singles casualty for the Falcons, falling to Geme at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-3. Parsons produced the best match of the day, coming from behind to beat Cibils at No. 2, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6. Freshman Laura Nigro posted her 20th victory of the season, defeating Meyer at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Shleby (No. 4) and Ashley Gee (No. 6) recorded straight set victories for the Falcons, while Black won the No. 5 match when Byrne had to retire after the first set.

    Air Force travels to Denver tomorrow for a non-conference match against Florida International on Saturday, April 7 at 1:30 p.m. The match will be played at the University of Denver.
