Falcons Fall to New Mexico, 7-0
The Air Force women's tennis team fell to 8-12 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference Friday after losing 7-0 to 38th-ranked New Mexico in Fort Worth, Texas.
UNM took an early 1-0 lead by winning the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Air Force's No. 3 team of junior Kelly Morgan and sophomore Erika Shortridge defeated Nora Quintal and Jennifer Ryba, 9-8 (3).
In singles play, the Lobos swept all six matches, including Iva Gersic downing AFA senior Kat Bushey, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot. Lucy Scott defeated Shortridge by the same score at the No. 4 position, while Mackenzie White clinched the team match with a 6-2, 6-2, victory over junior Morgan at No. 5.
Air Force stretched the Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches to three sets. Quintal defeated Lauren Wilson at No. 2, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7, while Ola Zekry rallied to beat freshman Christine Abayan, 6-7, 6-0, 10-8 at the No. 3 spot. Ryba won the No. 6 match, defeating Falcon freshman Meghan Kiser, 7-6(3), 6-1.
Air Force continues play on Saturday, March 25 against 22nd-ranked TCU, beginning at 2 p.m. (CT).
