Falcons Host Army in Gideon Cup Match on Saturday
The Air Force women's tennis team hosts service-academy rival Army in the annual Gideon Cup match on Saturday, Feb. 18, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Academy's Indoor Courts. Army broke a string of five straight Air Force wins in the annual classic last season with a 5-2 win at West Point. Air Force holds a 10-5 advantage in the series.
The Lt. Gen. F.C. Gideon Tennis Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the Air Force-Army women's tennis match during the season. The trophy is dedicated to preserving the good will and competitive spirit between the two academies.
Lt. Gen. Gideon graduated from West Point in 1940 and was commissioned in the infantry in 1941. He then became an officer in the Army Air Corp. He served the remainder of his illustrious career as an Air Force officer highlighted by commanding the 13th Air Force.
The trophy's first year marked the 50th anniversary of Gideon's graduation from West Point.
