Falcons Take on Army for Gideon Cup on Saturday
Feb. 16, 2007 The Air Force women's tennis team renews its rivalry with service-academy foe Army on Saturday, Feb. 17 in West Point, N.Y. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (ET). For the 17th consecutive season, the two teams will be battling for The Gideon Cup. The Lt. Gen. F.C. Gideon Tennis Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the Air Force-Army women's tennis match during the season. The trophy is dedicated to preserving the good will and competitive spirit between the two academies. Lt. Gen. Gideon graduated from West Point in 1940 and was commissioned in the infantry in 1941. He then became an officer in the Army Air Corp. He served the remainder of his illustrious career as an Air Force officer highlighted by commanding the 13th Air Force. The trophy's first year marked the 50th anniversary of Gideon's graduation from West Point. Army has captured The Gideon Cup the past two seasons, including a 4-3 victory over the Falcons at the Academy. Air Force still holds a 10-6 advantage since The Gideon Cup was introduced in 1991. Air Force, 4-2 this season, plays two matches at West Point on Sunday, against the University of Connecticut at 9 a.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson University at 3 p.m.
