Tahlia Smoke Named MWC Player of the Week
Feb. 9, 2011
Air Force junior Tahlia Smoke has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the conference office. It is the second career weekly honor for Smoke. Smoke won five of her six matches this past weekend, leading the Falcons to a perfect 3-0 record with wins over Montana State, Montana and Gonzaga, all by a 5-2 score. Smoke opened the weekend with an exciting doubles win over Montana State with sophomore Melissa Cecil. The Falcon No. 1 duo pulled out an 8-7 victory, helping Air Force sweep the doubles matches. Unfortunately, Smoke lost the No. 3 singles match in three sets. She rebounded nicely, however, and won her next four matches, including a 9-8 thriller with Cecil over Montana's No. 1 doubles team. Smoke and Cecil saved three match points and won the match that clinched the doubles point. Smoke then rallied for a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles over Heather Davidson. On Sunday, Smoke and Cecil dominated their doubles match, defeating Gonzaga's top pair, 8-5, and Smoke closed out the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Prue Teitzel in singles. Four of her five wins this weekend came against opponents she lost to during the fall season. Smoke is 5-1 in singles and doubles this spring, while the Falcons are 5-2 entering their home matches against Wofford (1:30 p.m.) and South Dakota (6 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 12.
